IEW English

IEW People and Places in Our Community

GR. 2-3

This entry level writing class is well suited for younger students that are capable of writing words and simple sentences. Learning about a variety of different places in the community and various roles that people in our community fulfill, students are positioned for success because they can relate. This course covers the first seven of the nine IEW Unit studies. In addition to the IEW text, grammar is added as they study a Parts of Speech Poem in the first semester and easy worksheets during the second semester. Root word vocabulary associated with every subject are studied to create an understanding of how words are formed and can change their meaning by adding affixes. Students study short poems throughout the year.

IEW Structure and Style Level A Year 1/2

GR. 4-5

This entry-level course introduces students to IEW's core Structure and Style writing curriculum through fascinating explorations of hot and cold deserts around the world. Students discover the animals, people, and unique environments of these remarkable landscapes while building essential writing skills. Perfect for grades 4–5, the program also accommodates younger students who are ready for more advanced writing instruction. Students develop foundational abilities through IEW's systematic, step-by-step approach. Gentle weekly test preparation includes analogies, vocabulary expansion, and critical thinking exercises that are essential for writing and overall academic development. Reading comprehension is practiced weekly for poetry, fiction, and factual texts.

IEW U.S. History Level B

GR. 6-8

Writing Through US History Students apply and deepen their writing skills through rich source texts drawn from American History. Each lesson integrates IEW's structural units with curated historical content. It is aligned to the Classical Conversations scope and sequence, making this course a natural and powerful complement to your co-op community day. Written feedback is provided for every assignment.

IEW Structure and Style for Students Level C Year 1

GR. 9-12

IEW Structure and Style for Students Level C Year 1 introduces high school-level writing through the Institute for Excellence in Writing's advanced methodology. This year's fascinating theme explores pirates and piracy throughout history and their impacts on modern society. Students study informal logic to identify and avoid fallacies in persuasive writing, while learning rhetorical elements to strengthen their compositions. Essential academic skills include preparing bibliographies, formatting in-text and block quotations, using paraphrased information correctly, and creating footnotes. Weekly vocabulary expansion and analogy practice build foundational skills, though comprehensive SAT and ACT preparation are offered as separate courses.

Mathematics

Our mathematics courses are designed to support homeschool families by providing high-quality instruction, accountability, and consistent practice. Each class consists of 32 instructor-selected lessons and includes required homework to reinforce concepts taught in class. Students are encouraged to complete all assignments independently and come prepared to participate in discussions, review, and new instruction. The goal is to build confidence, strengthen mathematical reasoning, and prepare students for continued success in future math courses.

Elementary School

Dimensions Math 2A & 2B

GR. 1–2

Build a strong foundation in elementary mathematics through the Singapore Math approach. Students develop number sense, addition and subtraction within 1,000, early multiplication and division, measurement, time, money, fractions, and geometry using visual models and hands-on problem-solving strategies.

Dimensions Math 3A & 3B

GR. 3

Students strengthen multi-digit arithmetic, multiplication and division, and mental math strategies while exploring fractions, measurement, time, money, area and perimeter, bar graphs, and basic geometry. Emphasis is placed on conceptual understanding and critical thinking.

Dimensions Math 4A & 4B

GR. 4

Students expand their understanding of whole numbers to one million, factors and multiples, multi-digit multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, and data analysis. Geometric topics include angles, lines, symmetry, area, and volume, with a continued focus on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning.

Dimensions Math 5A & 5B

GR. 5

Designed to prepare students for Pre-Algebra, this course covers large numbers, order of operations, fraction and decimal operations, percentages, ratios and rates, basic algebraic expressions, geometry, volume, and data analysis. Students develop the analytical skills needed for higher-level mathematics.

1:1 Math Tutoring

GR. 1–8

Individualized instruction tailored to each student's learning needs. Whether students need extra support, homework help, or enrichment, tutoring sessions provide personalized guidance to build confidence and mastery.

Middle & High School

Dimensions 6A & 6B

GR. 6

This course completes the elementary Dimensions Math series and prepares students for pre-algebra. Students deepen their understanding of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, rates, algebraic expressions, equations, geometry, data analysis, and negative numbers. The Singapore approach emphasizes conceptual mastery, visual models, and problem-solving strategies.

Pre-Algebra with AoPS

GR. 6–8

Using the Art of Problem Solving curriculum, students transition from arithmetic to algebra by studying properties of numbers, exponents, fractions, equations, decimals, ratios, rates, percentages, square roots, geometry, counting, probability, and statistics. The course emphasizes deep conceptual understanding and creative problem-solving over rote memorization.

Intro to Algebra with AoPS

GR. 7–9

This Art of Problem Solving course provides a thorough introduction to algebraic thinking. Students explore linear equations, inequalities, systems of equations, quadratics, polynomials, exponents, logarithms, functions, graphing, sequences, series, ratios, and proportions. The course develops strong problem-solving skills and lays the groundwork for advanced mathematics.

Intro to Geometry with AoPS

GR. 8–10

Students build a rigorous foundation in Euclidean geometry through the Art of Problem Solving approach. Topics include angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, circles, area, volume, transformations, trigonometry, constructions, and formal proofs. The course develops logical reasoning and spatial thinking essential for higher-level mathematics.

1:1 Math Tutoring

GR. 6–12

Personalized tutoring designed to reinforce classroom learning, improve understanding of challenging concepts, prepare for exams, and help students reach their academic goals.

Rotating Electives

These courses do not follow a fixed weekly schedule. Instead, they rotate throughout the school weeks, allowing students to experience a variety of elective classes. A rotating schedule provides flexibility while ensuring students have the opportunity to participate in each elective offered during the semester.

Electives Classes

A rotating selection of hands-on electives including Sewing, Chess, Sensory / Creative Exploration, and Archery. These courses let students try new things, build skills, and follow their passions in a fun, supportive environment.
